If you are a director of a camp or retreat involving minor children/youth or vulnerable adults, you are responsible for recruiting, training and leading an appropriate number of counselors/chaperone to maintain safety and security of participants. The Ohio Conference UCC follows American Camping Association guidelines for minimum supervision of campers.
These guidelines are:
• A minimum of 2 adults shall be with minors/Vulnerable Adults at all times
• Adults should match gender of minors/Vulnerable Adults
• At least two adults should supervise each cabin overnight.
• Adults counselors/chaperones must be at least age 18 and need to be at least three years older than the age of the oldest camper for whom they will have responsibility for supervising.
Adult:Youth Supervision Ratios should be maintained based on the following age breakdown:
5 years & younger: 1 staff for each 5 overnight participants and 1 staff for each 6 single-day participant
6–8 years: 1:6 for overnight, and 1:8 for day
9–14 years 1:8 for overnight and 1:10 for day
15–18 years 1:10 for overnight and 1:12 for day
o Example: 4 boys and 3 girls aged 9-14 years require 1 man and 1 woman
o Example: 24 boys and 15 girls aged 5 years and younger require 5 men and 3 women
