Come out and “play” with me!
Hello new friends! If we haven’t met yet, I’m Jill Frey and I am the new Executive Director of Outdoor Ministries for the Heartland Conference. I enjoyed meeting some of you at the Conference Annual Gathering and am looking forward to getting to know all our congregations.
I am very excited to start this new chapter of my career, being able to focus on Outdoor Ministry and Camp. I have been a Camp Professional since 1990 with three Girl Scout Councils. Although I have worked for Girl Scouts my entire career so far, my experience in the camp world has been much broader due to the American Camp Association, ACA. There I have visited many types of camps, attended conferences, worked on committees, and developed many strong relationships with camp professionals from all types of camps including traditional faith-based camps in my roles as a standards visitor and instructor, board member and educational committee member.
I fell in love with camp during childhood, when I discovered at camp I was taken seriously and seen as a leader for the first time. Camp gave me the confidence to stand up and lead in the real world. I have seen this same thing in my children as they attended camp and in so many other children and young adults I have mentored. I love watching them grow, many through adulthood who continue as professional peers or in other fields.
Mostly I believe camp is a very special place, because it is removed from “the real world”. We create an ideal community where participants feel safe, in order to learn and grow. This is universal at camp. I know this from visiting many different types of camp, talking and sharing with other camp professionals, and from ACA research studies from the past 15 years.
I truly believe that camp is the best place for growth, however you define the areas of growth you are wanting to achieve, for children, youth, and adults. At camp you have an intensive intentional experience. You have time for each other and yourself for learning, trying new things, reflecting, and supporting others much more than at home with the distractions and hustle and bustle of everyday life.
When you come out to Templed Hills for a church event, I hope to stop by at some point and visit with you. If you have something scheduled soon, please reach out to me at email@example.com and let me know what the best time would be for me to drop by.
If your congregation doesn’t have anything booked yet, there are some openings in November and December. Are you planning an Advent study this year? Why not have a kick-off or middle celebration of it at camp? Or how about a church family Thanksgiving celebration in mid-November? For reservations please call 800-678-5102.
Templed Hills is a great camp and is ready to really blossom. I am looking forward to partnering with all of you to develop it to its fullest potential. See you soon!
